AUTUMN RHAPSODY Oil on board Size: 32 x 58.5 cm (including frame) A rich and captivating mid-century abstract painting, executed in oil onto canvas by Swedish painter Hans Osswald (1919-1983), whose works have been exhibited at the National Museum in Stockholm, Malmö Museum as well as The Brooklyn Museum. Created with a masterful technique, the artist has skillfully applied broad brushstrokes as well as layers of paint to build up a raised texture and dimension, adding depth and dynamism to the work. Warm earthy tones of predominantly shades of brown, orange, and yellow fill the canvas. These colours infuse the artwork with a sense of vitality, evoking the vibrancy of autumn foliage. There are also touches of white, black, and blue that have been strategically revealed to add a sense of balance and to emphasise the surrounding colours. The artist’s bold and confident use of all these hues reinforces the painting’s abstract nature and creates a visual feast for the eyes. This oil on canvas is housed in a well-suited gilt frame. The painting has scattered areas of light craquelure present, most notably in the upper dark brown section, but the paint layer is overall very stable. Don Clausen is a graduate of California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, California. He lives and works in the San Francisco/Oakland Bay Area. He mainly works in oils on canvas, but sometimes does sculptures and assemblages. In his luminous abstractions, Clausen employs every color of the rainbow, the strong lines forming geometric shapes that appear to fly through space. Nothing is weighed down in his paintings; it’s as if images came to him from outer space or other realms. He turns the physical world into dabs and streaks of color that convey an engulfing sense of motion. Whether abstract expressionism or representational, his works convey enormous energy and vitality, like masterpieces by Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning. They also are distinctive for their sculptural quality, a result of his thickly layering the paint and then slicing down to the canvas with a palette knife or section of a venetian blind; his choice of tools is as eclectic as his subject matter. His son is the well regarded sculptor Eric Clausen, a master blacksmith who does sculpture in iron.
